Eric Schmidt built Google. He helped build the advertising infrastructure that funds most of the internet. He was an early backer of AI companies that are now reshaping the economy. From where he stands, artificial intelligence is a generational achievement -- proof that the bets he made on compute, on data, on the long arc of machine learning, were correct. He went to a graduation ceremony to share that with the next generation.
They booed him.
The gap between those two reactions is not a misunderstanding. It is a structural condition, and no amount of communication will close it because the disagreement is not about facts. It is about who is bearing the cost of the transformation Schmidt is celebrating.
What the Builders Measure
The executives and investors who built the current AI ecosystem measure its value in outputs they can point to: capabilities that did not exist five years ago, productivity gains that are real and measurable, the democratization of access to tools that previously required expensive expertise. Schmidt's generation of tech leadership genuinely believes they have done something good. The AI they built can help a small business owner draft contracts, help a student understand a difficult concept, help a researcher synthesize a literature in hours instead of months.
These are real things. The technology does them. The people who built it are not lying when they describe these benefits. They are describing what they can see from where they stand.
What the Graduates Measure
The students at that graduation have a different data set. They entered college four or five years ago with a set of assumptions about what their degree would mean: that developing a skill set, demonstrating discipline through credential-earning, and entering a field with expertise would translate into economic stability. Those assumptions are being revised in real time.
Entry-level jobs in writing, design, coding, paralegal work, customer service, and a growing list of other fields are being eliminated or restructured before graduates can access them. The traditional pathway -- learn a skill, get hired to practice it, develop expertise over years -- is being compressed or removed in fields that were supposed to absorb college graduates. The internship that was supposed to become a job. The junior position that no longer exists because the senior employee now uses AI to do both jobs.
The graduates are not booing AI research. They are booing the person who embodies the decision to deploy it at scale into the labor market they were about to enter, faster than any transition infrastructure exists to manage.
The Capture Problem
Schmidt and his peers have already won. They built companies, accumulated wealth, and made decisions about deployment and speed and labor market consequences from a position of financial security that insulates them from those consequences entirely. When AI eliminates junior creative positions, Schmidt does not lose anything. When it restructures the legal industry's entry-level pipeline, no one in Schmidt's network loses a job.
This is what makes the exchange structurally incoherent. He is celebrating a transformation whose costs fall entirely on people who had no vote in the decisions that produced it, speaking to them at the moment they are about to experience those costs most acutely. The graduation ceremony was the wrong room for the speech he thought he was giving.
It was the exactly right room for the reaction he received.
The Listening Gap
The tech industry has responded to early signs of AI backlash primarily by trying to communicate better -- more forums, more transparency about what AI can and cannot do, more messaging about AI as a tool that augments rather than replaces. The assumption is that the concern comes from misunderstanding the technology.
The graduates booing Schmidt are not misunderstanding the technology. They understand it precisely. They understand that it is capable, that it is improving, that it is being adopted by employers faster than any regulatory or social transition framework has been built to handle it, and that the people deploying it have every financial incentive to continue regardless of labor market consequences.
That is not a misunderstanding that better communication will fix. It is an accurate reading of the situation from the position of people who are absorbing the consequences.
Schmidt was booed because he showed up to celebrate a fire in the building where the graduates live. The building he set on fire -- or helped set on fire -- and does not live in.
The booing was not confusion. It was comprehension.
